Coffee lectures: Australian Symbolism

With curator Denise Mimmocchi

Denise Mimmocchi, curator of Australian Symbolism: the art of dreams, presents two lectures in conjunction with this fascinating exhibition.

They will provide background on the Symbolist movement, which developed in Europe in the late 19th century, producing works that portrayed the world of dreams, sensations and ideas over representations of material realities.

The lectures will also explore the responses to Symbolism from expatriate Australians in Europe and artists working locally, and will suggest the broader implications of Symbolism in Australian art from this period.
