Exhibition talks: Bill Henson
Explore Henson’s evolving photographic practice
Academics, curators and photography specialists reflect on the 14 works on display in Bill Henson: cloud landscapes. These short talks will consider Henson’s use of light and dark in his depiction of landscapes as well as figures.

Catriona Moore, lecturer, The University of Sydney
Catriona lectures in Australian and international art in the Department of Art History and Film Studies at The University of Sydney. She has researched and written extensively on postwar Australian photography. Drawing on this expertise and on her interest in contemporary Australian photography, tonight Catriona will consider Henson’s evolving practice.

Adam Jasper, writer and lecturer, University of Technology, Sydney
Adam Jasper is a lecturer in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at the University of Technology, Sydney. He is a contributing editor to Cabinet and has written for frieze, Bookforum and Art & Australia. In this talk Adam will consider the concepts behind key works and explore Henson’s career in terms of photography in Australia more generally.

Les Walking, artist, educator and digital imaging consultant
In 2012 Les was awarded Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography in recognition of his contribution to professional photography. He has exhibited widely and his work is represented in public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery of Australia. As a digital imaging consultant, Les lectures, researches and runs workshops and since 2008 he has assisted Bill Henson with his transition from analogue to digital editing and printing.

Eleanor Weber, assistant curator, photographs, Art Gallery of NSW
Eleanor graduated from The University of Sydney in 2012 with Honours. Her writing has been published by Art Monthly Australia, frieze, runway, this is tomorrow and un Magazine among other publications. In this talk, Eleanor will speculate on the role and possible meanings of Bill Henson’s use of blacks, both in the context of Bill Henson: cloud landscapes and in his practice more broadly.
