      The winner of two Helpmann Awards, Paul Capsis is best known for his cabaret theatre roles. Capsis talks with theatre critic and writer, James Waites, about his role in the 2005 theatrical production, Three Furies, which brought the life of Francis Bacon to the stage.

    • Eva Cox, writer, feminist, sociologist, social commentator and activist

      In the 1970s, Eva Cox became a spokeswoman for the Women’s Electoral Lobby. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1995 for her services to women’s welfare and was named Humanist of the Year in 1997 by the Council of Australian Humanist Societies. Eva talks about sexual politics and the place of women in society during the tumultuous years of Bacon’s early career.

      Dr Adrian Martin combines his work as a professional writer and film critic with a university career. Currently Associate Professor at Monash University in Melbourne, Martin was film reviewer for The Age between 1995 and 2006. Awarded the Byron Kennedy Award (Australian Film Institute) and the Pascall Prize for Critical Writing, Martin is the author of four books and hundreds of essays on film, art, television, literature, music, popular and avant-garde culture. Tonight he explores the influence of film on Bacon’s practice, and 20th century British cinema more generally.

      The Honorable Michael Kirby was formerly Justice of the High Court of Australia, serving from 1996 to 2009. The judge, jurist and academic is a National Trust Australian Living Treasure and was awarded the Gruber Prize for Justice in 2010. Addressing Bacon’s life and times, Michael talks about homosexuality and law reform.

      David Marr is an Australian journalist and author. As a political and social commentator, his areas of expertise include the law, Australian politics, censorship, the media and the arts. He is a Walkley Award-winning journalist and in 1991, Marr’s critically acclaimed biography of Australian writer Patrick White, Patrick White: A Life, won The Age Book of the Year Award. In this talk David looks at the relationship between Bacon and Patrick White (who once owned a writing desk designed by Bacon).

      Bertie Blackman performs songs from her latest album, Pope Innocent X. This album gets its title inspiration from Francis Bacon’s 1953 work, Study after Velázquez’s portrait of Pope Innocent X, which will be on view in the exhibition. Bertie’s father, internationally acclaimed painter Charles Blackman, lived in the same building as Bacon in the 1950s in London, and tonight Bertie will share stories from this time.
