Mad about Morandi
Two-day oil painting workshop with Kevin McKay
Giorgio Morandi once said, 'Nothing is more abstract than reality’, and he illuminated this perspective by almost exclusively painting still lifes. He painted ordinary objects in muted tones and with quiet simplicity that comes from reality but reaches the feeling of abstraction. Whether you are experienced or a beginner, you can find the poetic in the commonplace and develop your skills through still life painting.
This two-day workshop will give you the opportunity to sketch directly from Morandi works in the Art Gallery of NSW collection and to make a transcription from which you will develop your own still-life painting. The painter Kevin McKay will guide you through this process, discussing Morandi’s methods and explaining the fundamentals of composition, tonal painting and colour mixing.
The program is suitable for a broad range of experience; however, you will need to have some experience with drawing. The oil painting medium will be demystified for beginners, with Kevin showing you how to organise a limited palette and to mix black. His demonstrations on nuanced colour mixing will also benefit more experienced participants.
You’ll be provided with a sketchpad, pencil and charcoal. You’ll need to bring paints, brushes, canvases, rags, solvents, jars etc. A complete, detailed materials list will be supplied with your ticket.
