Janet Laurence’s sculptural installations address the fragility of natural environments and questions of sustainability. Her works emphasise states of transformation as well as cycles of life and death, typically mingling organic matter and scientific instruments with references to museum modes of display.

Richard Serra is a New York minimalist who emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s. Typical of that movement he uses industrial materials in simple unmodified modules. Contrary to the commonly held view that minimalism is without emotion or feeling, it is the physical properties of the object that affect the viewer.

Francesco Xanto Avelli ‘Large Plate: an allegory on the sack of Rome’ 1530

Xanto was one of the great masters of ‘istoriato’ maiolica. This is the term used to describe pieces decorated with figure scenes which cover virtually the whole surface of the piece.
