Magdalene Keaney, director, Gallery of Australian Design

Magdalene has held the roles of curator at the Australian National Portrait Gallery, associate curator of photographs at London’s National Portrait Gallery and creative director of Fashion Space Gallery at the London College of Fashion. Magdalene is currently director of the Gallery of Australian Design in Canberra, a new public gallery that explores and promotes Australian design. She has written widely on photography and tonight will share this expertise with insights into fashion and design.

She has a particular interest in and knowledge of fashion photography. In this talk, she will discuss the shifts that occurred in this area in the late 20th century while offering insight into the exhibition’s key themes.

Peter McNeil, professor of design history and associate dean, UTS

Peter is professor of design history at the University of Technology Sydney and professor of fashion studies at Stockholm University. He is editor and co-editor of eight works on fashion, including Shoes, Critical and primary sources in fashion and The fashion history reader, and is a regular critic, reviewer and co-curator. Tonight he will examine the works of Newton and Rheims and their influence on fashion.

Christian Blanchard, photographer

Christian is a freelance photographer and film director. Recently named by Capture magazine as one of Australia’s top ten photographers, he won Australian Fashion Photographer of the Year runner-up in the 2011 AIPP Professional Photography Awards. He has shot global campaigns for clients including Mimco and L’Oreal Paris and has produced editorial work for numerous international magazines. As well as teaching photography, Christian has contributed to various exhibitions in the last few years. He will share insights into how the photography of Newton and Rheims has shaped his practice.
