    • Introduction to soapstone carving

      Workshop

Much loved by sculptors, soapstone is soft and easy to carve. With a fine texture and beautiful colouring, it is a perfect medium for beginner sculptors.

This workshop will begin on Friday with a tour through the exhibition Sydney moderns: art for a new world, with a particular focus on Roy de Maistre’s Rhythmic composition in yellow green minor to explore the organic shapes and patterns in this work.

Over the course of the weekend, artist Wendy Black will take you into the studio and introduce you to the various tools and techniques of soapstone sculpture.

Learn how to shape, refine and polish soapstone, while using Rhythmic composition in yellow green minor as inspiration to sculpt the organic forms within the stone.

All tools, equipment and stone provided. Please wear flat shoes, and bring your lunch and a soft cloth to wrap your sculpture in.
