A specialist in Spanish art history, Dr Heckes considers Picasso’s life and artistic development from 1900 to 1905, the so-called Blue and Rose periods, including such Blue period works as Evocation (The burial of Casagemas) (1901), La Vie (1903) and the haunting La Celestina (1904), which appears in the exhibition, and such Rose period works as The family of saltimbanques (1905).
