‘I regard the photograph as a visual documentation of time and change.’ – Sue Ford 1974
Self portrait with camera (1960-2006) 2008 is a unique self-portrait comprising 47 photographs taken by Ford over her adult life. The series is made up of various print types from gelatin silver to Polaroid. In keeping with the concerns of her previous work the series explores the relationship between photography and time, drawing particular attention to the camera’s ability to record and in doing so allowing us to ‘see’ time.
Self-portrait with camera tracks Ford’s interaction with the still and moving camera. In part because the camera as an active tool is often as front and centre as Ford’s face, there is a particular dynamism at work between apparatus, subject (Ford) and viewer, and from one photograph to the next. The 47 pictures progress across the wall with the emphasis on that dynamism and, equally, how time knits things together and then unravels, dissolving at the last into thin air. This is a dispassionate examination of the artist’s life and work, with friends and family often entering the frame. Mirrors and reflections abound, some remarkable in their complexity, but as with all of Ford’s work there are no particular references to external or historical parallels. The plainness of the work provides its logic.
