Woolshed paddock - Cambalong

Despite scant information available on the artist, it is known that John Fuller was a Sydney-based photographer during the early to mid 1980s. His solo exhibition ‘Reflections of a journey (A highway of diamonds’) held at the Print Room in Woolloomooloo (21 April – 15 May 1982), received a favourable review in the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ 1 May 1982 written by Max Dupain. Dupain’s review suggests that Fuller, working in black and white, specialised in landscape photography and successfully employed a reduced tonal range and intensified graininess to capture the textures of the country he photographed.

According to Richard King (now retired, previously owner of the Print Room) who organised Fuller’s aforementioned exhibition, the artist studied at Seaforth Technical College from 1977-1979. Following a visit to India in 1980, Fuller apparently tutored at the Australian Centre for Photography where he held his first solo exhibition ‘An Indian journe’y. King notes that some of Fuller’s work was reproduced in ‘Australian photography magazine ’81’ and the ‘Bulletin’ magazine. King also thought Fuller might have moved to the south coast of NSW. Research to locate further information on the artist, beyond this period in the eighties, has proved unsuccessful.
