Anderle studied painting and graphic art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1955-1961. From 1961-68 he was an active member of the avant-garde Black Theatre of Prague, and subsequently worked at the faculty of applied art in Prague. His years with the Black Theatre gave him the opportunity to travel outside Czechoslovakia, a privilege rarely granted by the government, and see the paintings of Picasso, Max Ernst, Francis Bacon, and others, whose work made a lasting impression. In 1982-84 his work was shown at the Venice Biennale.

In dozens of his works, Anderle powerfully expresses human existential anxiety. His largely figurative images tackle subjects of war, oppression and isolation, and the artist has spoken of his interest in larger themes that explore the struggle between good and evil, past and present, life and death, illusion and reality.
