Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) studied and lived with the Aino (Ainu) people of Northern Hokkaido in the mid-1880s. This set of 3 tales, published by Kobunsha, Tokyo and distributed by Ticknor & Co. Boston was reprised in Chamberlain’s book ‘Aino Folk tales’, published a year later in 1888.
