This work was purchased from the auction of Charles S. Bennett's collection of pictures by Arthur Streeton, who acted for the Gallery. Streeton wrote about the purchase: 'concentrating upon a watercolour which looked to me the best example of his work (their were several) I bid 1 pound over another buyer and secured it for your Gallery for 28 guineas. Its characteristic of his work and looked simple and freer in execution than others: There was not what one would call a first rate example and I don' think one of his finest would be obtainable for 50 guineas. However, I sincerely trust that the example for the smaller figure will not cause dissatisfaction among Gallery visitors, who may expect in Buvelot the simple directness seen in Herbert and Heysen watercolours.'
