About
Helen Eager first began to use the triangle shape in 2004 and 2005 as a vehicle to express her vision of light and colour, drawing with oil pastels to work through the myriad possibilities of colour. She is interested in the relationships of shape and space both within a work and that arise between a work and its surroundings.
A number of these drawings were shown in her 'New directions' exhibition at Depot Gallery, Sydney in late 2005, as part of large-scale multi-panel compositions; while others have been displayed individually.
Eager's 'New directions' drawings of 2005 and painting 'VIF' 2010 also relate to her MCA commission 'Tango', a large-scale wall painting (2012) of bright orange equilateral triangles adjacent to the museum entrance staircase which she acknowledges as a tribute to works by Matisse and Mondrian in which 'colour and form dance together'.
