  • About

Philiberte de Flaugergues is among the many fascinating but largely forgotten female photographers from the early 20th century who broke through the ranks to work professionally as a fashion photographer between the 1920s and 40s. She is, however, better known for her female nude photographs set within highly symbolic mise-en-scène. In Flaugergues’s surrealist-influenced 'untitled' [woman in a mirror with pearl necklace] c1930, the sensuality of her erotic photographs is combined with the glamorous romanticism of her fashion work to produce an exquisitely metaphysical portrait study.
