About
'Kisses and crosses' is the first and last set of prints produced by Bob Law. They have their origins in drawings he made in Cornwall in the late 1950s, in which he lay in a field and mentally mapped the space around him with simple lines marking margins and pathways.
This portfolio is based on a series of drawings produced in the first months of the new millennium. The drawings are juxtapositions of signs for a kiss and a cross. Religion, love, rejection and national identity are invoked and reconfigured in these schematic representations. The drawings result from a kind of etching process, in which the ground is not a metal plate but the paper itself. Using a ruler and a screw, Law gouged into black gouache coated Arches paper to the white beneath. The resulting scratched markings were transferred onto an etching plate by the process of photogravure. The portfolio contains eight etchings from a series of eighteen drawings produced between 1-9 March 2000.
