As a teenager Nolan had worked for a commercial firm creating illuminated signs with enamels and tin foil on glass. He reintroduced this calligraphic approach to drawing on glass in the late 1940s. As well as a series of 66 works on the Eureka stockade, Nolan made a series on Greek subjects and others on outback landscape and flowers.
