About
The drawings in this sketchbook were all made between 1939 and 1948 when the artist was resident in Sydney, and is the only extant sketchbook from his Australian period. The drawings include life studies and preliminary ideas or preparatory studies for sculpture, some realized, others not. This was the period when the artist was first experimenting with phenolic resin (an early type of plastic), which ultimately led to his pioneering works in Perspex.
