Everton (Evie) Stokes, a sculptor, was a friend of Nora Heysen, first in Adelaide, and then later in England, where they shared a flat in London. They also travelled in England and Europe together.
The drawing is illustrated in the first book on Nora Heysen's work by Lou Klepac (1989) and has been included in exhibitions of the artist's work in recent years – S H Ervin Gallery, Sydney, National Library, Canberra and Carrick Hill, Adelaide, as well as the recent touring exhibition 'Drawn together' with Judy Cassab and Margaret Woodward.
