  • About

Silver jewellery, crafted by men, is an important element of Miao dress. Girls and women wear heavy silver bracelets, necklaces, earrings and crowns; silver plaques are stitched to their clothes. The Miao wear their clothes in multiple layers that indicate a family’s wealth. Poorer families cannot afford numerous layers of skirts and jackets, or extensive silver jewellery, even though each member of the community strives to have at least one elaborate outfit.
