  • About

Lawrence Carroll is an Australian who lives between Venice, Italy and California. His paintings are three dimensional often looking more like bandaged furniture or casts made in stiff canvas from architectural details. He has an affinity with the work of Rachel Whiteread whose forms are often derived from mouldings of architectural features. Both invoke a kind of memory of something lost or not quite grasped. Carroll's canvases are often multiple paintings layered up and sometimes they contain niches in which yet another painting may be folded up or rolled away. The finish is strongly suggestive of old walls that carry the patina of centuries, no doubt this is why he loves Venice the city with more such patina than any other.
