About
These two drawings are studies for a tempera painting 'Subway, Wynyard' 1948. A larger version of the painting was destroyed by the artist - this explains the size of the first study drawing, which is larger than the tempera work.
Hinder made a number of works relating to Sydney trams and the public transportation hub at Wynyard, where buses, trains and trams converged, bringing workers to and from the city. There were underground tram tunnels at Wynyard (referred to in the inscription 'Thru the Subway by Tram' on the second drawing). The dynamic rush of modern urban life was well expressed in Hinder's fragmented forms and refracted light, with elements synthesised from Cubism, Futurism and Orphism, into a harmonious overall composition.
While not directly related, these drawings also have echoes in the Gallery's recently acquired painting 'Tram kaleidoscope' 1948 and its six related studies in pencil and watercolour, also in the collection.
