Xu Lele, a talented female artist, satirises the literati tradition of figure painting. Her droll figures, engaged with the traditional scholarly pursuits of enjoying nature, relaxation, and wine, mock the disdainful demeanour of the scholars depicted by literati mentors such as the great Chen Hongshou (1599-1652).'
