- Further information
'Cui Zifan was born in Shandong province but has spent most of his creative life in Beijing. Originally he studied the works of the great 17th century individualist painter Zhu Da and was later influenced by the free brushwork and vibrant colours of Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi. Cui's work continues in the manner of those two mentors. The bold, expressive and dramatic contrast of black ink and colour is a consistent theme in his work. The painting is signed 'Zifan' and dated to the 'Xinyou' year [1981].'
