An angel appears to Joachim (father of the Virgin Mary) to announce the impending birth of his daughter. The angel's message comes in the form of an official document hung with seals. This woodcut belongs to the 'Life of the Virgin' series. The series of nineteen prints was published in 1511, with a frontispiece and Latin text on the verso of each sheet, although Dürer had designed most of the woodcuts between 1503 and 1505.
