  • About

The king wears armour, with the Garter badge on its gold chain. This engraving relates to a number of portraits of Charles I painted by van Dyck c.1637, although none of them corresponds exactly. During the Civil War, Faithorne served in the royalist garrison at Basing House. Following his imprisonment in London, he was banished to Paris in the late 1640s. There he was helped by the famous print collector, Michel de Marolles, and came under the powerful influence of the engraver Robert Nanteuil.
