  • About

Smith's successful career as a printmaker began when he was discovered by the artist Angelica Kauffmann while working in a linen draper's shop. In 1773 he set himself up as a print dealer, publisher and engraver, soon becoming one of the most important mezzotint engravers of the late 18th century. He reproduced works by most of the eminent British painters of his day. Of this portrait the authoress Elizabeth Montagu wrote: "The Primate's portrait at the exhibition is so admired I am jealous of it. I think some of the ladies will steal it."
