Napier Wailer was one of the first artists in Australia to make and exhibit linocuts. This early example of his work and the adjacent 'The shepherd' are so finely cut that they were incorrectly identified as wood engravings when first exhibited in 1923 at Tyrrell's Gallery in Sydney.
