'Dance of the football field' depicts two Sydney-based rugby league teams during a 1947 match in which the Balmain team (black and yellow) defeated the Manly team (maroon and white) at Brookvale Oval, home to the Manly football club. It is likely that Weaver Hawkins and his sons were in the crowd, as Hawkins lived in Mona Vale, north of Manly, at the time he created this painting.

The artist has signed the painting 'Raokin', an alias which he began to use from 1927, stemming from unwanted publicity as an artist living with severe injuries from World War I.
