Godfrey Miller studied in New Zealand, Melbourne and London, and was an influential teacher at the East Sydney Technical College from the 1940s until his death in 1964. His lattice-like paintings – comprising small geometric divisions and a restricted palette – express his enduring interest in spiritual and scientific systems, from cosmology to anthroposophy. Godfrey Miller drew the figure from life continuously with an increasing tendency towards the radical distillation of form. The figure drawings emphasise gravity, structure, rhythm and balance.
