Mortar (morteir)

- 18th c European porcelain
- Further information
In dinner services the mortar (so named from its shape rather than its function) accompanies the punch bowl and sits inside it. For this reason the lower half remains undecorated. The mortar and punch bowl were among the most expensive items in a service.
