This cup and saucer provide an example of the vivid yellow ground which Meissen developed with greater success than any other European factory. Mentioned in documents as early as 1723, the yellow ground was generally reserved for prestigious objects such as vases, but by the 1740s was also used for more ordinary wares. This cup is decorated with trading (Kauffahrtei) scenes. The scene on the saucer shows a fashionably dressed couple arriving at a country ford where a peasant seems to be offering them assistance.
