  • About

Guy Warren’s work is inspired by personal experiences and memories of place and is situated within the abstract expressionist tradition developed in Sydney in the 1950s and 60s among artists including John Olsen and Tony Tuckson.

A canoeing trip Warren took down the Shoalhaven River as a teenager proved to be an exhausting but thrilling experience, and Warren has returned to the imagery of the Shoalhaven and boats throughout his long career.

'Estuary in winter, Shoalhaven' was a finalist in the 1963 Wynne Prize. Its green and brown palette and abstracted plant forms vividly evoke the wintry, watery tidal mouth of the river. This work was acquired by the Gallery in 1964.
