About
Sculptor Robert Klippel and painter James Gleeson met in London in mid-1947. The artists held a joint exhibition at the London Gallery at the end of 1948, which included works of their surrealist based practice from this period. The show was structured as two separate solo exhibitions, but was linked by one significant collaborative work, 'Madame Sophie Sesostoris (a pre-raphaelite satire)', also in the AGNSW collection.
Klippel’s solo efforts in the exhibition included this sculpture and another also now in the Gallery’s collection: 'Fever Chart'.These early works are indicative of Klippel’s fundamental study of the intricacies and relationships between the machine and organic; of configuring external form through internal tensions, which continued to inform his practice throughout his lifetime. -
