How the Gallery works

Our vision is to open people’s eyes and minds to the wonder, richness and sheer pleasure of art.

The Art Gallery of NSW is an art museum – one of the most popular and significant in Australia.

Established in Sydney in 1871, we’re the state gallery of New South Wales, part of Communities NSW.

Our purpose, as defined by the Art Gallery of New South Wales Act 1980, is to develop and maintain a collection of works of art, and to increase knowledge and appreciation of art – which we do through a huge range of exhibitions, programs and activities.
