A few rooms in the Gallery are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, which are on display for a shorter period of time (usually a couple of months). There are around 40 of these each year; some have an entry charge.
If an entry fee is charged, it is listed on the exhibition pages of this website under What’s on. Tickets can bought online as well as at the Gallery at the . For details of concession eligibility, see frequently asked questions.
Our exhibitions are usually organised around a particular theme. For example, they might show the work of just one artist or of many artists from one place or period or art movement; or they may bring together the work of artists from different places or periods who share something in their subject matter, ideas or approach.
At the Art Gallery of NSW, our temporary exhibitions usually include works from our collection, which we show alongside works borrowed from other galleries, museums or private collections. Sometimes, the exhibition showcases works from just one other collection (usually overseas), which people in Sydney may not otherwise see.
There are several exhibitions at the Gallery that are held regularly, although they feature different artworks each time. These include the annual competition exhibitions for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes along with ARTEXPRESS, which presents a selection of works from Year 12 visual arts students for the NSW Higher School Certificate, and the biannual Anne Landa Award for video and new media arts.
We also send some of our exhibitions on tour to other venues.
