Screenshot winners 2012
The Screenshot 2012 student photo competition attracted 89 entries.
This year, the competition was run in association with the exhibition Flatlands: photography and everyday space and entries to the competition explore the theme of photographic space.
Judge’s comments
Prize-winners were selected by the Gallery’s senior curator, photographs, Judy Annear, who commented:
It is very encouraging to see Screenshot grow. Now in its second year, the competition is producing more entries which are diverse in their approach. It is clear that the entrants are really thinking about what they are doing with the camera.
This was particularly evident with the Juniors who looked at everyday spaces from all sorts of imaginative perspectives without being in any way tricky. The most entries came from Intermediate students who clearly roamed all over the city finding the strange in the familiar. The Seniors were invariably sophisticated in their approach to what is photographic space.
In all cases the winners had refreshing takes on what they were seeing and capturing through the lens, and then how they presented the final image. The subtleties of photographic space can be seen in all the finalists’ works.
