Behind closed doors
HSC year: 2005, ARTEXPRESS year: 2006
Expressive form: Sculpture
We are fascinated by other people’s lives, as the popularity of reality TV demonstrates. Similarly, Behind closed doors gives glimpses of everyday activities.
The boxes represent different front doors that allow the viewer to experience the feeling of looking in on people’s lives. Ten of the doorways reveal people doing everyday activities, as in many of Vermeer’s paintings. The eleventh, with its mysterious black/white eye, confronts the viewer into realising that as much as we are fascinated by the way others live, it isn’t really appropriate to be peering into other people’s private lives.
