Who watches the watchmen?
HSC year: 2011, ARTEXPRESS year: 2012
Expressive form: Sculpture
By using found objects in my work I have bestowed a second life, and new meaning, on objects that have been discarded. The miniscule toy soldier in a rustic picture frame alludes to outdated attempts to inculcate society’s youth with propagandist ideology such as war-mongering nationalism. The curvaceous form that runs through the work represents an authoritative figure, responsible for this indoctrination. The Roman poet Juvenal perfectly encapsulated my disillusionment with the abuse and distribution of power in society when he asked, 'Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?’ – 'Who watches the watchmen?’
Influencing artists: Robert Rauschenberg, Auguste Rodin, Cy Twombly
