Max Meldrum’s Archibald-winning portrait of George John Bell (1872-1944), painted in 1939, is now in the collection of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. It is based on a very similar portrait, painted in 1938, that had been commissioned by the Historic Memorials Committee at Parliament House, Canberra, which remains in that collection.
