Archibald Prize 1968

Entries: 141 (one selected)
Exhibition dates: 15 January to 16 February 1969 (winner only)
Each artist could submit up to two works

Due to building works at the Gallery, there was no Archibald Prize 1968 exhibition so no selection for display, although all entries in consideration are listed in the Gallery’s prizes archive.

The judges selected four entries, including works by Judy Cassab, Scott Pendlebury and David Rae. Only the winner – William Pidgeon’s portrait of artist Lloyd Rees – was hung at the Gallery, along with winning works from the Wynne and Sulman Prize competitions.

A separate exhibition held at the Telegraph Home Centre, Sydney, for two weeks from 18 January 1969, featured a small number of what the Telegraph newspaper called ‘specially selected “rejects“’ from all three competitions. It’s not known exactly which works these were.
