Further information

There is a study for this painting in the National Library of Australia {NLA] collection.
Crooke recently recalled that Johnston was in ill health when the portrait was painted and died shortly afterward. See Meacham, Steve, 'Survivor: Thursday Island’, The Sydney Morning Herald’, 1-2 November 2003.
The reason for an off-site exhibition this year was demolition/reconstruction work at the AGNSW.
Only the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes were exhibited the previous year (and an off-site exhibition of Wynne entries only).
Artist’s address is 4 Union Street, Mosman. (Entry Form ?/?/69).
