Clifton Pugh Sir John McEwen

The subject of this Archibald Prize-winning portrait by Clifton Pugh – John 'Black Jack’ McEwen – was prime minister of Australia between the disappearance of Harold Holt on 17 December 1967 and the appointment of John Gorton on 8 January 1968. In the Archibald Prize 1971 catalogue, McEwen was misspelled McEwan.
