The People’s Choice was established, and Fred Cress won both the new award and the Archibald Prize for his portrait of artist John Beard.

A portrait of artist Arthur Boyd, by Sidney Nolan was withdrawn from the exhibition after the trustees received a complaint that Nolan had not been resident in Australasia for 12 months preceding the date of entry, as required by the rules.

Artist Vladas Meskenas took legal action against Gallery director Edmund Capon over remarks Capon made about his portrait of financier Rene Rivkin, which had not been selected for the exhibition.
