Geoffrey Proud and the subject of his Archibald Prize-winning portrait, poet and playwright Dorothy Hewett (1923-2002), were old friends. He told the press he had decided to paint her after reading her recent autobiography Wild card. He had previously exhibited a portrait of her in the 1981 Archibald.
