Kristin Hardiman Day at the races

oil on canvas

This painting is based on my day at the Warwick Farm races in late February this year. I hoped to capture a range of emotions and reactions prior to the race between the jockey, the steward and the two horses. I wanted to bring out the nervous energy of the racehorse in contrast to the nonchalant feelings of the steward’s horse and the professional, relaxed body language of the young female jockey.

I have a particular interest in the inter-relationships between people and animals. I am also interested in the relationships that animals form with each other. Animals have definite and individual personalities and are affected by moods just as we are.
