Michael Peck The watch

The watch is a poetic exploration of the notion of the ‘frontier’ and what this might mean within our changing world. Homi K Bhabha wrote that ‘The “beyond” is neither a new horizon, nor a leaving behind of the past…’; in essence, new frontiers are not the ones which lie hidden in the future but rather they are the ones we negotiate each day, that appear right in front us. The child in this painting explores a landscape that shows the hallmarks of history and human interaction, yet there is something within his composure that suggests a re-imagining of his surroundings and the promise of transformation.
