Neil Moore The story of Perseus and Andromeda
oil on canvas
147 x 158 cm
I’ve been under the spell of classical mythology for as long as I can remember. In this painting my aim was to do a version of the story of Perseus and Andromeda – he the gorgon slayer and she a chained sacrifice to a sea monster – with contemporary elements; a dream landscape in a mildly distorted space.
But the painting is also intended as a parody, not in any negative or sneering way, but a deeply admiring one of a kind of Renaissance painting I love where the armour is beautifully painted and the heroes interestingly ineffective.
