Timothy Hutchinson Back Creek, Cowra

I grew up having to cross Back Creek every day to get to school. Usually it was bone dry but there were rare instances of flooding when Back Creek became a torrent and we’d be unable to get to school.

However, Back Creek as a source of inspiration is really only a starting point. As with most of my work, the subject comes second to the process of painting.

In the painting, there is a flat area of land in the foreground beyond which the creek’s path is delineated by a suggestion of tree shapes. The remainder is a fairly dramatic sky pressing down and pervading the image with the effect of what could be a hot summer’s day.

The painting is decidedly sketchy on detail, more akin to the impression and mood of a past encounter.
