Across the Desert celebrates the early development of Aboriginal women's art practice through the evolution of batik production. This exhibition highlights the different aesthetic and cultural traditions that have articulated the work of women at five central desert communities: Ernabella, Fregon, Utopia, Yuendumu and Kintore. Batik emerged as a dynamic new form of Aboriginal art during the 1970s and 1980s and Across the Desert features many of the exceptional and pioneering works from this time.Featuring contributions from the collaborators of the exhibition, full colour plates of the featured works and exhibition checklist, this 168-page catalogue is a great resource for insight into the medium.
